Get inspired by these amazing prom themes to create a magical prom that will be unforgettable. Although it might seem like an overwhelming task, it’s easy to zero in on a prom theme. Simply set the theme and start ordering matching prom invitations, prom tickets, coordinating prom banners, etc.
Once your prom committee has been created then you can pick the theme. It’s important to first establish your budget. Knowing your budget will help determine your venue and impact which themes are most appropriate. Remember, some themes are great for a limited budget. Others, of course, are not.
Finding inspiration on the internet is a great way to get a handful of ideas to start with. Movies, songs, and clothing styles are all things to consider when picking a theme your classmates will love. Don’t forget to get input from fellow students to narrow your choices and then have your school or committee vote on their favorite theme. It can be done by a show of hands or secret ballot, just make sure it’s the theme the majority of those attending will like.
To get you started, here are our favorite prom themes that stand the test of time and involve decorations that make a huge impact.
1. Masquerade Ball
A masquerade theme is a classic for proms and decorations, invitations, etc. are readily available. One thing to determine early on in your planning is if your masquerade theme will have a Mardi Gras flavor to it with bright colors, a vintage or lavish feel or a dramatic and mysterious style. Each is easy to pull off but a tight and consistent style will result in a more impactful prom theme.
For a Mardi Gras-type prom think of using blue, green and purple in your decorations, invitations and favors. For a luxe vintage theme, gold should be the dominant color scheme. Find prom invitations, tickets, posters and banners such as these below to enhance the glamorous look and feel of the festivities.
Another idea is to use gold mylar balloons and balloon arches, gold candelabras and glitter masks to create an ornate atmosphere. Architectural columns (real or otherwise), fabric drape or gilded picture frames such as the one from cardboard below also provides a dramatic effect.
Your prom playlist for a Masquerade theme should include a few moody, classical pieces but also include some of these more modern favorites:
- Masquerade by Ashley Tisdale
- Carnival Time by Al Johnson
- Grand Illusion by Styx
- Putting on the Ritz by Taco
- Golden by Jill Scott
Everyone can live like a celebrity at a Hollywood themed prom. The beauty of this theme is that it can be held almost anywhere – a hotel, rental facility or gymnasium. The most important element of decorations for a Hollywood theme is, of course, the red carpet. You can easily rent a roll of red carpet for your guests or use inexpensive red plastic covering.
These prom invitations do a great job of highlighting the theme and providing all the necessary details of the event.
Added touches of gold and silver in addition to spotlights and clapboards to complement the theme nicely. Cardboard cutout “paparazzi” can also be made or ordered online to greet your guests at the door!
Music is an important part of a Hollywood themed prom and your playlist can include:
- Paparazzi by Lady Gaga
- All Star by Smash Mouth
- Fame by Naturi Naughton
- Hollywood by Jay Z
- Spotlight by Jennifer Hudson
3. Under the Sea
The Under the Sea theme is a beautiful prom theme and one that can be held at your local aquarium if the venue permits. Your own gymnasium or rental facility can also be transformed into a water world with blue and green decorations and pops of color.
This is a great theme to get creative with. Shower caps and crepe paper make cool jellyfish to hang from the ceiling, shells and sand combine for great centerpieces and clear balloons strung together make create a great bubble effect.
A prom playlist for your Under the Sea theme could include:
- Under the Sea – Little Mermaid Soundtrack
- The Tide is High – by Blondie
- Waves – by Mr. Probz
- The Ocean – by Led Zeppelin
- Surfin Safari – by the Beach Boys
- Somewhere on a Beach by Dierks Bentley
- Cake by the Ocean by DNCE
4. Great Gatsby
A Great Gatsby or Roaring 20s themed prom night will be one the students never forget because of the beautiful decorations. Black, white and gold will be your primary colors. Try adding a black and white checkerboard floor using heavy construction paper or plastic for extra elegance.
Vintage 1920s cars also make luxurious decorations as part of a backdrop. Draped fabric and feather centerpieces create a luxe look with the addition of twinkle lights. Tiaras, fedoras and aviator sunglasses all make fun props for photos.
While music from the 1920s is most appropriate for this theme, you can also include classics such as:
- Puttin’ on the Ritz by Taco
- All that Jazz – Chicago Soundtrack
- Lights – by Ellie Goulding
- Steppin’ Out with My Baby by Tony Bennett
- Glamorous by Fergie
- Suit and Tie by Justin Timberlake
5. Starry Night
Finally, one of our favorite prom themes is Starry Night. It’s a simple yet beautiful theme and is one of the easiest to pull off on a budget. Dark tones of blues, and especially grays and purples set off the twinkle of lights – the star of the show for this theme.
Furthermore, suspended cardboard stars and moons make for a magical effect. Also, think about accenting your decorations with luminaries, lanterns and jars filled with strings of light. In addition, tree branches adorned with lights make great entrances and walkways. And sparkly mylar stars or balloons are both inexpensive and provide a magical touch.
Your Starry Night prom playlist can feature songs about stars, moonlight and nighttime. Therefore, here are a few of our favorite:
- A Sky Full of Stars by Coldplay
- Cosmic Love by Florence + the Machine
- Sky’s the Limit by Jason Derulo
- Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin
